Microsoft announced last week that it will soon be releasing a free VoIP program for mobile devices running on the Windows Mobile operating system.
The new service will “take the form of a voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) application that allows Office users to make free voice calls over Wi-Fi enabled phones running Windows Mobile software.” These capabilities will be included in a new version of Microsoft Office Communicator, which is due for release later this year.
With Wi-Fi phones still relatively uncommon, this new service might not make an immediate impact on the wireless communication industry, but it will almost certainly cause skyrocketing demand for compatible devices. And with wireless hotspots becoming more and more plentiful, there will likely be a gradual decrease in the demand for traditional mobile phones.
This is especially true of regions where citywide wireless hotspots are under construction. Truly free wireless communication is becoming a more real possibility for customers, and a greater threat to mobile phone carriers, with each passing month.
